That tube passes through the freezer wall or ceiling, carrying room-temperature water into a sub-zero environment. If the freezer temperature drops too low, if the tube isn't sealed perfectly, or if a few droplets remain after the fill cycle, the tube freezes solid from the inside. The next time the ice maker calls for water, the valve opens but the water has nowhere to go. The ice maker cycles anyway — you may hear the ejector motor and the heater — but no new water enters the mold, so no new ice forms. The water dispenser on the door keeps working fine because it uses a separate line. The Fix, Step by Step

  2. Remove the ice bin. Pull it straight out and dump any remaining ice into the sink. Set the bin aside and look at the ice maker unit mounted to the freezer wall or ceiling.
  3. Locate the fill tube. It's a small plastic tube or spout that enters the ice maker from the back or top, usually directly above the ice mold. On some models, you need to remove a plastic cover or shield to see it — these usually snap off with gentle pressure.
  4. Inspect the tube for ice. Look for a visible plug of ice at the end, frost around the base, or a bulge in the tube. If you see any of these, the tube is frozen.
  5. Thaw the tube with a hair dryer. Set it to medium heat and hold it 4 to 6 inches from the fill tube. Move it in a slow back-and-forth motion. Don't hold it in one spot — you can warp the plastic. After 5 to 10 minutes, you should see water droplets or hear ice cracking inside. The tube is clear when you can see through the opening or feel warm air passing through it.
  6. Alternative: Use a turkey baster with warm water. If you don't have a hair dryer handy, fill a turkey baster with warm (not boiling) water and squirt it directly into the fill tube opening. Repeat until water flows freely through and out the other side into the ice mold.

Also call a pro if you see water leaking behind the refrigerator or under the freezer drawer — that indicates a cracked water line inside the wall, not just a frozen tube.
