Your electric oven uses two heating elements: a thick tube at the bottom (the bake element) that provides steady, even heat for roasting and baking, and a thinner one at the top (the broil element) for direct high-heat cooking. The bake element does 90% of the work in a typical oven, cycling on and off to maintain the temperature you set.

Over years of heating and cooling, the metal inside the bake element degrades. Tiny cracks form in the outer sheath, moisture gets in, and eventually the element shorts out or breaks completely — often with a visible pop, a bright arc of light, or a burned spot you can see through the oven floor. Once the bake element fails, the oven can't maintain temperature. The broil element may still work (so the top of your food browns while the bottom stays raw), and the oven light and control panel still function — which makes the failure confusing. The Fix, Step by Step

  1. Turn off the breaker for the oven at your electrical panel. Electric ovens run on 240 volts — double the standard household current. This is not optional. Find the double-pole breaker labeled "Range" or "Oven" and flip it to the off position. If you're unsure which breaker controls the oven, turn off the main breaker to be absolutely safe.
  2. Remove the oven racks and set them aside. You need clear access to the bottom of the oven interior.
  3. Locate the bake element. It's the thick metal tube that runs along the bottom of the oven cavity, usually in a U-shape or a single loop. At each end, you'll see a screw or two securing it to the back wall of the oven.
  4. Unscrew the mounting screws. Use a standard Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws at each end. The element will tilt downward slightly once the screws are out — that's normal.

  6. Disconnect the wires. If they're spade connectors, grip the metal clip (not the wire itself) and pull straight off. If they're screwed, loosen the terminal screws. Take a photo first so you remember which wire goes where — though for a single element, polarity usually doesn't matter.
  7. Remove the old element completely and take it to an appliance parts store, or search online using the model number from the sticker inside your oven door frame or on the side of the door. Universal elements cost $15 to $30. Match the shape and wattage if possible.
  8. Connect the new element. Push the wire connectors firmly onto the new element's terminals, then slide the element back into position against the back wall.
  9. Reinstall the mounting screws, replace the oven racks, and turn the breaker back on. Set the oven to bake at 350°F. The new element should glow a steady, even orange-red within a few minutes. You're done.
While you're in there: Inspect the oven's door gasket (the rubber seal around the frame). If it's cracked, torn, or loose, heat escapes and the element works harder than necessary. A new gasket costs $10 to $20 and pushes in by hand — no tools needed.
Safety note: Never work on an electric oven with the breaker on. Even with the oven controls off, 240 volts are present at the element terminals. If you see melted wire insulation, scorch marks on the oven walls, or smell burning plastic, stop and call an electrician. These indicate a wiring fault, not just a failed element.
