Because these sensors sit so close to the ground, they get bumped by lawn equipment, kicked by shoes, coated in dust, splashed with mud, and spider-webbed on a regular basis. When one sensor gets knocked even slightly out of alignment, the beam misses the receiver. The opener interprets this exactly the same way it would interpret a child under the door: as an obstruction. It refuses to close, or reverses immediately. The Fix, Step by Step

  2. Locate both safety sensors. They're the small plastic boxes mounted on the vertical tracks on either side of the door, 4 to 6 inches off the ground. One has an amber or orange LED; the other has a green LED. The colors vary slightly by brand, but one should be steadily lit when power is on.
  3. Check the LED indicators. A steady light on both sensors means they're powered and aligned. If one is off, blinking, or dim, that's your problem side. If both are off, check that the opener is plugged in and the breaker isn't tripped.
  4. Remove all obstructions. Look between the sensors for anything blocking the beam: a leaf, a box corner, a broom handle, a pile of snow, a soccer ball, or a thick spider web. Even a strand of grass can break the infrared beam. Clear everything.
  5. Clean the lenses. Use a soft, dry cloth or a cotton swab to wipe both sensor lenses. Don't use glass cleaner or water unless the lenses are heavily soiled — moisture can temporarily confuse the electronics. A dry microfiber cloth is usually enough.
  6. Check the alignment. Each sensor should face the other directly, level and square. Gently wiggle the sensor bracket. If it moves easily, it's loose. Loosen the wing nut or screw on the bracket, adjust the sensor until the LED glows steady and bright, then retighten. Repeat on the other side.
  7. Verify the wiring. Follow the thin wires from each sensor up to the opener head or the wall. Make sure none are severed, chewed by rodents, or pulled loose from the terminals. If a wire is detached, reconnect it firmly.
  8. Reconnect the opener by pulling the emergency release cord toward the opener (or pressing the remote while the door is fully closed, depending on your model). Test the door with the remote. It should close smoothly and stay closed.
While you're in there: Check the garage door tracks for debris, dents, or obstructions. A bent track or a roller off the rail can also trigger the safety reverse, but the sensors are the first and easiest thing to rule out. Also lubricate the rollers and hinges with a silicone-based spray — not WD-40, which attracts dirt.
Safety note: Never disconnect or bypass the safety sensors to "fix" the door. It's illegal, voids your homeowner's insurance, and puts children and pets at risk of serious injury or death. If the sensors are broken or the wiring is damaged beyond a simple reconnection, replace them — a new sensor pair costs $20 to $40 and takes 10 minutes to install. Never attempt to adjust or repair garage door springs or cables yourself; they are under extreme tension and can cause severe injury.

If you've cleaned the lenses, confirmed alignment (both LEDs steady), checked for obstructions, verified the wiring, and the door still reverses or the sensors still blink, the issue may be a failed logic board in the opener, damaged sensor wiring inside the wall, or a problem with the door's travel limits and force settings. A technician can test the sensor circuit with a multimeter and recalibrate the opener. Also call a pro immediately if the door is crooked, makes grinding noises, or if a spring or cable is visibly broken — these are not DIY repairs.
